Sliding Patio Door Hard to Open or Won't Lock? Common Fixes
Zak Snow

A sliding patio door should glide open with one hand. If yours drags, judders, jumps off its track or needs a shove before it will lock, the cause is usually one of a few things, and most of them are fixable without replacing the door.
Start with the track
The bottom track collects grit, leaves, pet hair and dead insects, and the rollers have to run over all of it. Before anything else:
Vacuum the track thoroughly, including the corners.
Wipe it down with warm soapy water and dry it.
Check for anything stuck in it, such as small stones or a screw.
Apply a light silicone spray to the track if the manufacturer allows it. Avoid oil or grease, which pick up dirt.
If it slides much better afterwards, that was the problem. Keep the track clean every few months.
Worn or damaged rollers
The door sits on small wheels (rollers) at the bottom. Over time they wear flat, crack, seize or the bearings fail. Signs include:
a grinding or rumbling noise when it slides
the door feeling heavy, or moving in jerks
the door sitting lower than it used to, or rubbing at the bottom
Worn rollers can be replaced. On many doors the roller height can also be adjusted, which can lift the door back into line.
A damaged track
If the raised rail on the bottom track is dented, bent or worn, the rollers won't run smoothly however clean it is. Depending on the door, the track can sometimes be repaired or covered with a replacement rail cap.
The door won't lock
If the door slides fine but the lock won't engage, or you have to lift or push the door to lock it, the door has usually dropped or moved, so the hooks no longer meet the keeps on the frame. Adjusting the rollers and keeps usually sorts it. If the handle is stiff even with the door open, the lock itself is worn and needs replacing. Read more about our lock repairs.
Security worth checking
Older sliding doors could sometimes be lifted off their tracks from outside. Many doors have anti-lift blocks or devices fitted at the top. If yours lifts noticeably in its frame when closed, it's worth having checked.
